SLAM

A method by which a robot builds a map and works out its own position on it at the same time.

When a robot is placed in a new room it has no map and does not know where it is. SLAM solves both problems together, using LiDAR, cameras, or both, and the result is a map the robot can reuse the next day.

For a buyer the useful question is how fast the robot maps your space and what happens when furniture moves. A cleaning robot with good SLAM maps a floor in one pass and remembers several floors. A weak one gets lost in long empty corridors or glass halls.
